Pre-Cruise – Historic Anchorage Hotel

We Made It

Upon arrival to the airport, we saw lots of HAL staffing meeting and greeting.  We did as about the train, and contrary to what we had heard about the train station in town, we did need to catch our train at the airport.  Glad I asked, otherwise it could have been bad.  The travel documents did say that we needed to be at the airport to catch the train, so this confirmation from on-site staff was very comforting.

We chose to book our own hotel and not use HAL. We paid $229/night for our room at the Historic Anchorage Hotel.  We chose this hotel as we wanted to stay in something a little less corporate.

Check-in was a breeze - we arrived at about 3:30 PM and did not have to wait.

The Room

The room was nice, with two double beds and a sleeper sofa.   We were given a corner room which gave us a nice view in two directions.

The room did not have central air, but it wasn't needed.  The windows all opened and a really nice fan was provided.  The weather was so nice we did not need the fan at all.  The room was clean and very spacious.

The view from the room was good but obviously not as good as a room in a tower can be.  The downtown area is not overly scenic, but it was very nice.  Had a nice view of the park area.

Hotel Time

The location was great.  It was a short walk to plenty of shops and restaurants.   There were flowers everywhere, even hanging baskets lining the streets.   Lots of artwork ranging from classic totem poles to a sculpture of a salmon made of CD's.  We enjoyed the cool air as we strolled around town.

We walked down to the other end of town to see the Captain Cook statue.  Along the way we did a little shopping and checked out the local restaurants.

Friday -

Ate breakfast at the hotel as it was included in the room rate.  It was a basic continental breakfast, but it also had make yourself waffles.  Of course more shopping and then off to catch our train - Yippee!  To the Train
