10:00 AM thru 6:00 PM
The sea air makes it easy to sleep in, and since we weren't due to reach Glacier Bay until 10:00 AM there was no reason to get up early. When we finally did get out of bed it was off to the Lido. It seemed less crowded today and we quickly found a table.
Back to the room to plan our days. The girls picked the times they wanted to go to Club Hal and when they wanted to be with us. Club Hal had a special glacier watching activity for the kids which they really enjoyed. I made sure all my cameras were ready.
Glacier Bay was very different from what I had pictured in my minds eye. To me it was this large bay with glaciers all around. In reality it was much like College Fjord, with various glaciers located back in their individual valleys. The early portions of Glacier Bay were actually relatively glacier free. Instead we got beautiful mountains and waterfalls to enjoy. The weather was overcast with a few sprinkles, but not bad.
We all took a break and grabbed lunch in the Rotterdam Dining Room as we were not due to reach the primary viewing spot until about 3:00 PM. I kept thinking I should grab a burger by the pool, but the lunch menu just looked too tempting.
As we approached Margerie Glacier it made Harvard Glacier look small. The overcast skies made the blue in the glacier much easier to see. Apparently we were told, sunny skies actually reduce the amount of blue you can see.
Of course what we really wanted to see was some calving, and Margerie did not let us down. It took awhile and I'm sure a fair amount of people gave up. But she did come to life and calved fairly frequently during the last 20 minutes or so we were there.
The naturalist was on the bridge narrating while was enjoying the view from my little weather safe viewing location. I learned a great deal about glaciers and the wildlife of the area.
Casual dining tonight in the Rotterdam. Two nights, and two great menus.
I started with the Crabmeat Cocktail Mimosa, Grandma's Chicken Noodle and the House Salad. My entrees tonight were the Braised Lamb Shanks and the Slowly Roasted Prime Rib of Beef. The Crabmeat was great! Soup and salad rated a good. The lamb was just the way I like it and the Beef was excellent.
The show tonight was preceded by a gem talk which was very popular, but we
did manage to get good seats. Still felt uncomfortable walking in front of
people during the talk to get seats. Tonight's show was "Master
Illusionist Les McKinney". The show was really about half magic and
half comedy filler. We enjoyed the show with some interesting twists on
standard illusions.
Just before turning in my daughters were out on the verandah when my oldest daughter leaned in and asked if we knew there were whales outside. Of course we all ran out to see what she had been watching. It was a very feisty whale that was putting on quite the show. It ended with the whale doing a full breach! The next morning we heard that it created quite the stir for the second seating diners who also enjoyed the show. I actually did catch the breach on film, but as the whale was pretty far away, it really just looks like a splotch on the picture.
Next will be our first day on land - Sitka.
