Luckily Atlantis was based at our hotel. We called down from our room and the next sub was leaving in ten minutes. We quickly made our way down and were on our way.
They take you out to the sub which is about a mile off shore. Just as you arrive the prior dive will be surfacing. Watch the chase boat for the location. A quick tie-up and off go the old passenger, and on with the new. Although the seas were not rough, my wife did get a little sea sick (she was fine on the cruise later) when she was below deck. If you have problems, you may want to take some preventative measures.
The sub is powered by batteries so it runs very quiet. Every seat has a good view, as two people share each large window. As soon as the sub begins to submerge you begin to see fish. Also, once underwater, the ride is very smooth. Air conditioning keeps you very comfortable.
The dive goes down to about 125 below the surface. On the way you pass man made reefs from sunken planes and ships. In addition to the typical fish, we saw a moray eel and a sea turtle.
I consider this a must do after taking the trip. I hear that the sights are even better off Maui. The kids loved being able to tell people they had been on a sub. The sub allows us who cannot scuba dive to experience the wonders of the deep. Very cool.
